Activate and Set Up Your Miles Plug

Setup takes about five minutes. Park somewhere safe with a clear view of the sky — a driveway works better than a garage for GPS and cell signal — and keep your keys, your phone and your Miles Plug handy.

Start by downloading the app.

  1. Download the Miles app

Get it from the App Store or Google Play.

  2. Create your account

Enter your email address. Miles sends a one-time 8-digit code to that address instead of asking you to set a password — enter the code to continue.

  3. Follow the in-app instructions

The app walks you through every step from here. Keep it open as you go.

  4. Activate your Guard membership

Use the same email address you used at checkout to find your Guard membership in the app, then follow the prompts to activate it. You can also enter the membership code from your Miles membership email.

  5. Plug in Miles

When the app tells you to, find your OBD-II diagnostics port. It is usually under the dash in the driver's-side footwell, just left of the steering column. Push the Plug in firmly until it seats, then start your car. Your owner's manual lists it as the OBD-II port if you cannot find it.

  6. Take your first drive

Miles starts getting to know your car and builds a trip recap. It can take a few minutes for that first information to appear in the app.

Questions

What should I expect on my first drive?

Miles starts learning what information your car provides. Your app home screen begins to fill in with engine, fuel and battery status, and it can take a few minutes for that first information to appear.

Miles detects the start and end of a trip on its own and creates a recap under the Trips tab. As you go, you will see the live route and speed. Miles also checks for engine error codes and any open recalls on your vehicle.

I cannot find the port.

It is usually under the dash in the driver's-side footwell, just left of the steering column. Your owner's manual lists it as the OBD-II port.

I did not get my sign-in code.

Check your spam folder first. If it still has not arrived, request a new one from the app — codes are single-use and expire.

How do I get alerts about trips?

Once you are through setup, open Places and Notifications in the app and choose what you would like to hear about.

Something is not working.

Contact us and tell us what you are seeing. A few details up front — the car, what the app shows, what the light is doing — saves a round of questions.
